2ND ANNUAL SUMMER FESTIVAL:
PARK AVE PARTY ON JUNE 10TH
RUTLAND, VT – As part of National NeighborWorks Week 2017, join NeighborWorks of Western Vermont and Rutland Recreation to preemptively kick off summer vacation with a proper block party beginning at 11:00 am until 2:00 pm on Saturday, June 10, 2017. This event is free and open to the public.
That’s right – we are closing down Park Avenue (between Harrison Ave. and Pine St.) so that we can share with our neighbors grilled BBQ and Stewart’s ice cream cones around community picnic tables, dance to George Nostrand and Tom Irish’s live music, play lawn games, race bikes, paint faces, and learn some new skills like what goes into making compost!
Throughout the day, Master Composters will be providing a how-to-compost workshop and giving away free counter compost buckets. Also, Johnson & Son BikeWorks will be offering free bicycle maintenance workshops to teach families basic bike repair skills for safe summer riding.
So, kids will want to bring their bikes, especially because at 1:00 pm, Rutland Recreation will be hosting two bike races after the Youth Mountain Bike Club puts on a super cool slow-bike demonstration. Prizes for the fastest and the slowest will be awarded, but only if every rider wears a helmet, so don’t leave it at home.
Rutland Recreation will also be reserving the final 7 garden spots in the Northwest Community Garden, so if you haven’t started a plot yet, you’ll want to get here early to sign up! Other community organizations such as the Rutland Free Library, VT 2-1-1, and CCV will also be there, plus the Fire Department will be offering tours of the fire safety trailer. Get to know your local firemen!
Residents of all ages are encouraged to bring a neighbor to tie dye a shirt and participate in a community clothesline art project at 117 Park Ave. You’ll see us raffling off $20 Vermont Farmers’ Market gift certificates at the porch, so swing by.
There is still time to sign up to table to share what cool things you’ve got going on, and you’ll want to be part of the fun, so don’t delay. To register your organization’s participation or to volunteer individually, fill out this quick online form, or email Bianca Zanella, [email protected].

In the event of inclement weather, check the Facebook Event page for a cancellation notification; we’re hoping for sunshine to start the summer off right – one festival at a time.
